One specialism within our clinic is the treatment of movement disorders: this primarily includes Parkinson's syndrome, dystonia and disorders where the patient suffers from severe involuntary muscle contractions (tremors).
We offer deep brain stimulation treatment for patients with Parkinson's disease, as part of our wide range of therapies.
Broad spectrum of treatments
The therapy options for these disorders have constantly been improving over the last few years. As well as medication-based treatments, other special forms of therapy have also proved to be effective, for example medication pumps in cases of Parkinson's disease (Duodopa and Apomorphin pumps), injections of botulinum toxin for cases of dystonia and spasticity, and surgical treatment methods such as deep brain stimulation. In order to achieve the very best results, we integrate the whole spectrum of these different treatments into our therapy plan.
Using all means possible
Dr. med. Niels Allert's team includes physiotherapists and occupational therapists who work closely together with the doctors and therapeutic care staff to improve our patients' mobility. Speech and swallowing therapists further enhance our range of therapies, as do neuropsychologists and neuro-educators. Through the collaboration of this multidisciplinary team, we are able to exhaust all possibilities when it comes to treating our patients.
Occupational therapy sessions improve everyday skills
As well as other complementary therapies, we implement a targeted approach to the use of occupational therapy treatments for patients with movement disorders. We improve, recover or compensate for skills in a variety of different areas, that patients have either lost, or that have become impaired.
Cooperation with University Clinic Bonn and Cologne
We work closely together with the Department of Neurosurgery at the University Clinic Bonn and at the Clinic for Stereotaxis and Functional Neurosurgery at the University of Cologne on our deep brain stimulation treatments. After careful examinations to determine whether the procedure is suitable for our patients, they are transferred to the surgical suites for treatment. During the course of inpatient follow-up treatment in our clinic, we set the optimum stimulation parameters, adjust the course of concomitant medication and intensify the treatment by using the different methods of motor rehabilitation.
Inpatient and outpatient care
Our specialist wards are serviced by specially trained doctors and therapeutic care staff who understand the particular needs of patients with movement disorders, and who are qualified and competent contact people, available to patients around the clock.
Therapies such as pump treatments and deep brain stimulation are closely monitored and carried out during special ward visits.
We also treat patients with movement disorders in our outpatient department for physical and rehabilitative medicine. As well as diagnostic assessments, we also offer accompanying courses of treatment, particularly to those patients undergoing special forms of therapy such as deep brain stimulation, drug pump treatments or therapies involving botulinum toxin.
