One specialisation of our clinic is neuro-urology, the field where urology and neurology meet. It is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of dysfunctions in the urological organs, following damage to the nerves that control them.

A young department with great results

Neuro-urology is a relatively young field of medicine, having evolved in the last few decades from the urological rehabilitation of paraplegic patients. Despite this, it has experienced an enormous growth in knowledge, and has achieved remarkable successes in terms of treatment. Today, nine of every ten patients with bladder dysfunction can be successfully treated.

The spectrum of treatments

Our department has a highly modern diagnosis and therapy infrastructure. The multidisciplinary team, lead by the Endowed Chair for Neuro-urology at the University Clinic Bonn, works closely together with other departments within the centre. We provide therapies for incontinence, and the rehabilitation of bladder dysfunctions for patients with paraplegia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, craniocerebral trauma, strokes, dementia, interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome, incontinence following operations on the spinal column and intervertebral discs, incontinence following prostate operations and urinary incontinence in old age. We understand the complex risks posed by the urological dysfunctions that result from neurological disorders, and treat them with an interdisciplinary and holistic approach.

Cooperation with the paraplegia centre

We work particularly closely with the paraplegia centre that is situated right next door. Our expert rehabilitation of neurogenic bladder disorders is a key element of our paraplegic patients' treatment, in terms of its effect on their quality of life, their ability to avoid developing any complications, and their life expectancy.

Diagnostic possibilities

Our diagnoses are made on the basis of various urodynamic procedures, through which the processes can be made both measurable and visible. As well as video-urodynamic investigations, we also carry out complex incontinence assessments, urine analyses, urological radiology, endoscopy/endourology, diagnostic sonography of the urinary tract and sexual organs and neuro-urological neurophysiological examinations.

Therapy and advice

We carry out our treatments using the most up-to-date conservative and operational treatments. We perform medication-based treatments and pelvic floor exercises with biofeedback, bladder instillation therapy, collagen injections for the urethra, botulinum toxin injections in the bladder for incontinence, botulinum toxin injections in the sphincter in cases of urinary retention/prostatis, and botulinum toxin injections in the prostate for cases of benign prostate hyperplasia and for the treatment of sexual and fertility disorders. We also offer advice for patients with faecal incontinence, and provide medical aids.
Working with the Endowed Chair we are able to ensure that it is possible to carry out major neuro-urological operations using the facilities available at the Urological Clinic of the University Clinic Bonn.

Treatment objectives

With our sophisticated diagnostics and individual treatment of neurogenic and complicated urinary bladder dysfunctions, we aim to ensure every patient achieves the greatest level of independence possible, and control over their vegetative functions. The therapeutic care staff are there to inform, guide and advise: our patients have access at all times to a competent and qualified member of staff.
